CAMPING / HIKING CHECK-LIST

Any time a Scout goes on a camping trip or hike, he should always be prepared

by carrying the Ten Essential items in his pack.

These essentials will allow a scout to survive in the outdoors in most any emergency situation.


THE TEN ESSENTIALS:

____ Canteen/Water Bottle (w/water in it!)

____ Extra Food (trail snacks are good)

____ Extra Clothing (and Sweater/Jacket)

____ Rain Gear

____ Personal First-Aid Kit

____ Compass and Map

____ Waterproof Matches/Fire Starter

____ Pocketknife

____ Sun Protection (Sunscreen and Hat)

____ Flashlight (w/extra batteries)

 

 

OTHER ESSENTIALS:

____ Scout Handbook

____ Notepad & Pencil

____ Large Zip-Lock Bags

____ Large Trash Bag (for water barrier)

____ Necessary Prescription Medications

____ Toilet Paper (in zip-lock plastic bag)

INDIVIDUAL ITEMS:

____ The Ten Essentials

____ Backpack (duffel bag O.K. if car camping)

____ Sleeping Bag and ____ Pad

____ Cup and ____ Bowl

____ Knife, ____ Fork, and ____ Spoon

____ Rope or 3mm Cord (25' for bear bags)

____ Extra Socks

____ Sweater/Sweatshirt

____ Windpants/Sweatpants

____ Insect Repellant

____ Lip Balm (unscented)

____ Soap (biodegradable)

____ Small Towel

____ Toothbrush

____ Disposable Camera (optional)

____ Swim Suit (optional)

 

GROUP ITEMS (normally shared by two or more):

____ tent (don’t forget the poles & stakes)

____ ground cloth (for tents)

____ cooking gear (pots, spatula)

____ stove & ____ brillo pad (optional)

____ water filter (Giardia is everywhere)

____ trowel (you'll need it for latrine duty)

 

NOTE:  All shoes must be closed-toe!  No sandals or flip-flops allowed.

WET WEATHER GEAR:

____ Garbage bags (for pack liners)

SNOW CAMPING:

____ Extra Sleeping Pad

____ Ground Cloth (for inside shelter)

____ Gaiters (boot-to-pants covers)

____ Small Insulated Pad (for sitting on)
