1. The following should be done prior to coming to the Camp-O-Ree because those skills will be needed in the events:

 

A. Complete the rope requirements for Tenderfoot and First Class. (Tenderfoot, 4a and 4b, First Class 7a, 7b, 7c)

 

B. Know how to tie the following:

1) Square knot

2) Bowline

3) Sheepshank,

4) Sheetbend

5) Roundturn with two half hitches

C. Be proficient in tripod and round lashings.

 

2. Build the following items and bring to camp with you:

A. As a troop, build a scale model of a signal tower or a monkey bridge.  Correctly anchor the model using either the 1-1-1 anchoring system or the log and stake method.

B. Make a useful camp gadget using lashings.  (examples: wash stand, drying rack, gateway, tripod table, boot holder, etc.)

 

3. The following stations will be rotated:

Station one: Distance event.  Rope throw contest.  Here we will coil and throw a forty foot length of rope to see how far we can throw it.  Then we will add weight to the ends of the rope and throw it again.  We will also discuss the different types or rope and how the different types are suitable for different applications during scouting events.  We will discuss the proper care and storage of ropes.

 

Station two: Timed event.  Using a rope making device or machine, we will make a rope of about 6 feet long of three strands.

 

Station three: Timed event.  We will use a rope and tackle to demonstrate how to lift and pull a log or other item.  We will also discuss the potential damage that friction can do to a rope.

 

Station four: Timed event.  Build an A-trestle using square lashings.  Tie two spars together using shear lashing.

 

Station five: Accuracy event. Black powder rifles.

 

Station six: Informational event.  Dutch oven cooking.
